The past two days were spent sailing - where I have Japanese knitting classes and lo and behold they have endless, free microsoft classes that I am taking when available! I will have to spend a week resting when I arrive home!
Shanghai is considered to be a place only for the last 400 years. Today, it is considered 40 years old, beginning when Mao died. Shanghai was all a fishing village until then. Ancient toilets and landry are still done in most places.
Most of the buildings (and there are many as you will see in the skyline pictures
have been built in the last 40 years. While Hong Kong is considered a capitalist place, the rest of China is considered socialist.
Women are working but not refuse to live with mothers-in-law (which was the ancient way) and will not marry until the man they wish to marry has his own apartment. Apartments can begin at 1 million American dollars and go up from there. Consequently people marry at an older age. Some partners are still chosen by parents but others are not.
Today is a holiday in Shanghai, it is called the day of "the sweeping of the tombs" this is when families go to cemetaries to clean up their ancestors tombs.
I spent the day in Zhujiajiao, a watertown fishing village - it was very interesting - all transportation including mail is done by sampan (a small boat) it was touch and go getting into a moving boat!
